Hi all,

I am about to purchase a DVD recorder.

I primarly want to use it for copying PS 2 (eventually XBox) games and to copy DVD movies.

I surfed around the web, read some reviews and came up with these two drives:

Toshiba SD-R5002
http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=57&Search=Search&list=

Pioneer DVR-A04
http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=20&Search=Search&list=

I tend to get the Toshiba drive. Got better experiences with Toshiba.

What do you guys think?
Or is there a better choice for my purposes ?

If you plan on burning xbox games in the future then get the Sony DRU-500a. You need to use the +r option for xbox games and the Sony drive burns to both -r and +r.

whats the difference between + and - r ?

and is the

Sony DRX500UL

equivalent to the Sony DRU500A ?

the UL is external with usb connectivity.

and one further question:

can you burn ps2 / xbox without the need of chip modding your console?

kudos

It is just a different type of media. Some devices use -r and others use +r. If your PS2 is a v5 or above it doesn't matter what you use. Xbox likes +r media. The DRX500UL is just the external model of the DRU-500a. Yes you need a mod for both. You can do a knife trick on the PS2 but it will just bust your PS2.
