Messiah2 "Switching modes"?

Hi guys, got a quick question.

I rescently got a PS2 with a messiah2 installed.
It boots PS2 backups no problem, I just put them
in and they play. But to play PS1 backups I
have to power down the PS2 and hold the
reset down for 1 sec to play PS1 games. After
that I can reset all the time and play PS1 backups
but have to shut down to play PS2 backups again.
Im told this is "switching modes". Is this normal?
I thought Messiah2 was direct boot on everything?
Or did I just get ripped off?
