does anyone now what it is . i use a 12 speed writer but i can only get it to work at 8 speed . it just started to play up in the last 2 days

may be you're pc is not fast enough for this speed
have you test it with cdspeed99 ?
have you ##### udma ...
try easycdwriter with test option before burn and he told you
the max speed he reached !
type of CD is not certified so maybe *8 max ?!
kill no absolutely necessary running tasks...
power ok ? ...
try theses first !

I used to get the same problems with my 4x burner... I never found out what it was. It wasn't buffer underruns, and I tried practically everything. The only thing I never tried was cleaning the lens.
