I'm looking for someone who can tell me how the lisenced PS2 games boot and if it boots from the disc, how come this info hasn't leaked out to make a boot disc, so we won't need to pay for a mod chip on DVD-R and CD-R backups....

There are many obsticals that have to be overcome when booting backups, not just 1.

Licenced ps2 games have all of these obsticals taken care of.

The boot data for original PSX,PS2 games are pre-pressed into the cdr blanks before the games are burned. No cd writer can burn this data.

I think it has to do with Error correction. It's built in the Originals.
With CD-R drive or DVD-R drive for that matter it corrects that..
So technically if you got a burner that would not correct the Error you TRUELY got a 1:1 Copy..I could be wrong but I'm positive about it..But No CDR drive in the world will NOT correct this..

You can do what you suggest but have to defeat one thing. When you press EJECT to swap the disk the PS2 is rigged by Sony to perform the region and valid PS2 game check. So when you pop a backup in, it fails to load.

A modchip works round this check.
