View Full Version : "insert disc" error when using cd-r on messiah
Hi
I just recently ran into a new error on my ps2. When I use CD-r which I have burned myself I get insert Disc error several times before the games actually start. I never happend before as I have had messiah for some months now. I started happening last week. I never got "insert Disc" then. also It never happens when I use DVD-r or DVD-movies. All the CD-r games I have never start up at the first try.
I have read something about that the reset button may be curropt and the PS2 thinks it's an PSX game, but that can be because I can start DVD-r's. Also I never happened before, it just happened all of the sudden.
I burn the games at 16x on Verbatim Datalife CD-r's, which I think are good CD-r medias. Do you guys think that the laser had had it enough? I have heard roumers about CD-r's fucking up the laser, which the loud sounds explain when I play CD-r's...
Thank u for ur help
Thanku
try burning the games at a slower speed, i.e. 4x.
the error you mention ALWAYS happened for me on badly readably media only.

Arakon is absolutely right. If it boots DVD-Rs, the PS2 is fine. It is unlikely that the lower power CD laser diode is in difficulty unless you've overdone a recalibration.
You need a Plextor or Yamaha with Running OPC to try burning at that speed and it usually slows down to 4x anyway, maybe 8x on CD-Rs with a short write strategy (see my post "CD-R Burning Speed".)
Hi again
I tried as u said, I burned a game with 4x speed, the game started fine at the first try. But when I tried to start it again I got that insert disc crap again... I also ran out of Verbatims so I bought Imation 80-minutes cd's which I burned that game on...
btw, I've heard that if a cd-r has a dark-blue surface it means that the cd-r is of the finest quality, but if it has more green/yellow colored surface it means that the cd-r is of bad quality. Both Vebatim Datalife and Imation has green/yellow surface... Is this just crap and somebody has tricked me???

As I said in my first reply, you should read my post "CD-R Burning Speed".

Then I'm sorry for your problem, but the answer to the yellow/blue question is in my post and in English!
Basically the post says that from the point of view of burning speed, the yellow/green ones burn the best at higher speed (4x on cheap burners, 8x on best burners). The blue ones require a slower speed of 1x or 2x for best results on a good burner.
The quality of the disk is the protective layer. I should say that the disk is most vulnerable at the top where there is little material between the label and the data layer.
I appritiate ur replies, I got an impression that u think I'm lazy and stuff and wanted all the answers served on plate, but no, I didn't understand much of that post. Anyway, I'm very thankful of ur help....
but this reply only gave me information about yellow/green & dark-blue cd-r. What about the "insert disc" problem... I've still not solved it... I burned the game on a yellow/green cdr on 4x and still it didn't work... read previous replies
again thank you very much for ur help, all of u :):p

The people who come on the forum with bad English never use idioms like "served on a plate"! So you are a rare one. Your English is very good, actually.
We are trying to help you and the pure reason for the red screen with insert disk 'crap' as you put it is as follows.
The PS2 has recognised that there is a disk in the drive but has not recognised it as a PS2 disk.
The loud sound is because the laser has difficulty focusing or following the groove.
It is important that you say that these backups do occasionally play. This does point to a laser problem. It is unusual for the CD laser to give up befor the DVD laser unless, of course, it is an early PS2 that was very heavily used with CDs in the past and especially if you have upgraded from NEO2.2 to Messiah.
Did you upgrafe to Messiah from NEO2.2? Was the PS2 very heavility used with CD games before you put the Messiah on?
what game was it?
I know the cdr version of blood omen 2 has that problem often unless you use decent blanks.. verbatims should be, but try a different brand too.
The plate idolam (???) i used is a complete translation of an idolam in my language... lol :)
I've noticed another thing. The insert disc screen mostly occur on ISS2 and Pro Evolution soccer. ISS2 I have is published by Kalisto on the net, while the Pro Evolution is a game I burned from a buddy. Both are burned on 16x. but I burned ISS2 again on 4x, and still got the error. I think I'll try to burn Pro Evolution again on 4x.
I have never installed a chip before Messiah. I bought my PS2 in January 2002 and installed Messiah in Mars.
Also another thing I noticed was that the sometimes PS2 goes in the "browser..." screen when I try to play Pro Evolution. At that time PS2 is very noisy. After some short seconds in the "browser..."screen PS2 show the usual insert disc error.
Btw the insert disc screen is the black one and not the red one as u mentioned.
I appologize for not trying everything before asking for help.
Thanks alot!! :)

If it's the black insert disk screen then the PS2 has determined that there is no readable disk in the drive. It can't focus or it can't find the groove.
I assume that this happens with everything or is it just these games?
If it's just these games, then what copy program do you use, what reader/burner and exactly what parameters? And if it is just these games, why don't you suspect them?
