I have been using my HP 9300i with no problems since I bought it last year. A few months ago, I reformatted all my drives and installed WindowsME (I was previously running Windows 98SE).
The next day I tried to copy a CD with CloneCD (version 2.8.5.2). It got to about 14% done when I got the error message:
"Writing to CD failed, MEDIUM ERROR: WRITE ERROR - LOSS
OF STREAMING (3:0x0c:0x09)"
I tried again and again with the same results. I changed the media (a
no-name brand of CDR74s), turned off DMA on my hard drives, tried different programs (Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, Nero 5.5.1.6, CDRWIN), and tried making different kinds of CDs (audio, data, MP3, etc.), all with the same results. I also upgraded the firmware to v1.0c to see if that would fix the problem, but it didn't. I ran the diagnostic tool that came with the drive, and every test found nothing
wrong.
I wrote HP, who finally gave up on giving me suggestions on what to do (because nothing was working) and sent me a new replacement drive. I popped it in, and the same damn thing happened.
Since then, I've been updating my burning software to the lastest versions to see if that's whats wrong, but nothing works. I've even completely rebuilt my computer from the ground up, including new case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, new IDE cables, 450 watt power supply, etc. to no avail (I had assumed it might be a hardware problem). I've reformatted my hard drives and ####ted from scratch more than a few times (tried Win98SE and WinME) to try to correct the problem, but nothing worked. I even took all components off my computer (took off all USB peripherals, and all PCI cards - all I had was my AGP video card, a mouse, a ###board and a monitor) to see if something was conflicting with the drive. Nope.
Here's the kicker: I took my drive out and put it my friend's computer (a Compaq of all things) and it worked flawlessly. I put his 4x burner (made by Philips) in my computer and it gave me the same error message I got with the HP, yet it works fine in his. I tried the same thing with another friend with his Iomega ZipCD and got the same results.
I've noticed that when I burn in Nero, the burner's buffer ####ts out at 100% (like it should), but as it depletes, it never gets refilled and once it hits 0% I get the error (as I should). However, when I put it in someone elses computer, the buffer refills just fine.
I know my burner works just fine, so buying a new one would be a waste of money, especially since it won't work with my setup anyway. Last week I bought a new 80GB hard drive to add on to my system, so first what I did was partition it how I wanted, then installed Win98SE on it. I unplugged my other drives (except for my burner) and booted off the new drive (with a new CLEAN install mind you). I installed CDRWIN and tried to burn some stuff. Let's just say I was pissed cuz it didn't work again. Someone please help!!! I need to burn stuff! I have 160GB of storage now because I keep buying hard drives to store stuff I would normally store on CDs! Help.
