I currently have an IDE CD and a SCSI CD writer. I set it up in this way because there used to be issues making copies across the SCSI bus. I am now in the position of upgrading my CD writer and would like opinions on whether to stick to this arrangement or go for IDE - IDE or SCSI SCSI ? What do you think !

Unless you are going to be burning to more than 2 burners at a time, or you are going to be using the cdrw drive as your main cdrom drive then save your money and get ide...

I am concerned that the copying of CD's will work correctly across the IDE bus ?

I wouldn't worry too much about the IDE bus - most of the burner research these days is aimed at IDE users.

As long as your system is fairly recent and hence up to the job of burning at a fast speed and you don't intend to do too much whilst burning, IDE is fine. On the other hand if you absolutley must use your computer to process other CPU-intensive tasks whilst burning then SCSI drives give the least hassle in this respect, although IDE buffer-underruns are less frequent these days with 'burn-proof' technology.

I'd be more concerned with the writer itself, as some are better at copying protected titles than others. This applies to both SCSI and IDE drives.

Hope this helps you out a bit. All the best :-)

as wayniac suggests these days EIDE & SCSI are both fairly well matched with todays tech heads if money is an issue the go for IDE otherwise stick with the setup you have now rememver if it isn't broken the why tryand fix it

This will only cause problems if you connect your CD-ROM and your writer to the same IDE-Channel.

I strongly suggest in addition to connect your burner as PRIMARY and not SLAVE as many do

Hi there,

I myself prefer the IDE (CD) - SCSI (CD-R) and the SCSI - SCSI combination. That is because it's the best way to have an external writer and thus it doesn't heat up the system. BTW I never had any problems, but after all:

Any combination should work fine, if you configure the drives in the right way and last but not least: SCSI devices are more expensive, so why spending more money than necessary?? It's definitely up to you !! Happy burning !

Just one more thing I remembered in SCSI's favour: you can literally add as many drives as you like (each card usually allows 6)!

I agree with you guys on IDE almost preferred over Scsi..Although I'm not in a position to say anything because personally I have One Scsi
Cd-rom and 2 Scsi 8x Burners..
Also I want to brag but everything I use on my machine is Scsi interface..Zip,HDD,Scanner etc..
Recently I just bought IDE Interface DVD-R Drive..Pioneer A03..It's A beast for a IDE Drive..
Only due to them, not having a Scsi Version..
I guess Scsi is wearing out sort of speak..
What to do for Scsi freak like myself..Ha..Ha..
