Yamaha isn't a "real" 16x drive. TDK sells Plextors, sanyos and lately ricoh models. That means it's an O.E.M company and most of these companies don't post new Firmwares as frequently as the originnal companies. Acers can duplicate everything (except DC), even SD2. I think there is a 16x10x40x Acer model. They are cheap. I'd go for that model!

What I mean with yammy not being a "real" recoprder is the use of P-CAV writng, Reading technology which is slower than usual. It also doesn't support any anti-coaster technology. Acers do...

Ok, I've always been kindof wary of the acers because i'm a technican at best buy and the gernal conception has alwyas been that they are not quality product, but everybody on this board seems to think otherwise. Everyone at work tends towards the yamaha's but then again most people here wouldnt know the difference. If i do get an acer i have 3 words, Preformance Service Plan. What do you mean that the TDK Velocd is an oem, Plextors and Richos are very good and sanyos are allright so that should mean that the TDKs are good units right, or what am i missing, you say they dont update firmware as often but you could use plextor or richo firmware updates right? Thnx for the help

It seems the only solution as far as being able to backup virtually anything then, is to get yourself a tower case and fill it with two or even three of the best IDE writers you can get. Or go for SCSI for serious burning sessions.

I have a Traxdata 8x writer, but like the other people have suggested I think it's an "OEM" model possible made by Philips. It does most stuff I ask, but most of the stuff is cracked already. It even does self-boot DC titles using CloneCD, despite the extra 20sec it takes for the Sega log screen to appear! Never could figure out just why that was..

Perhaps the manufacturers of these drives know only too well what people are planning to do with their new-found freedom, and hence deliberatly try and limit a drive's capabilities or restrict if from copying certain protections. There doesn't seem to be only clear winner at the end of the day, does there? Pitty, 'cos we all know that the moment someone releases a super-duper copier, they'll clean the shelves quicker than Bill Gates makes a dollar!

The Acer *can* do DC stuff, even the discs with short audio tracks. The problem is that the drive announces itself as being SAO compatible, when it is not. Just set TAO mode in Discjuggler 3.00.750 or above and the Acer will work fine with DC games. It really is the drive to go for if you want to copy everything.

Just two things though...

1) You'll need a good CD reader, I'd suggest the Toshiba drives. Only problem with the Tosh is slowish DAE (7-16x).

2) The Acer is very media-picky. It will respond much better to gold media than blue/green Cyanine.
