I just bought a plex writer have installed it into my system. However i have a suspicion that something is very wrong.
My first suspicion is that whenever there is a cd in the drive the drive light is ALWAYS turned on, and i mean always.
I have a strong feeling that this is related to the many lockups of my computer, when im trying to read a cd. The lockups havent been consistent though, and i have in fact burned a cd.
i have tried to move the writer around from IDE1 to IDE0 and switching it from slave to master and so on, but no luck.

my system is
Mobo = asus K7M AMD 751 chipset
cpu=700 athlon
ram=128 pc100
graphics card, Geforce 256 ddr
soundcard=soundblaster AWE 64

plz respond

Sorry I havn't got anything more substantial, but here's the recommended procedure for conneting cd-roms and hard drives:

IDE PORTS:

Primary: master = hard-drive
slave = not connected or usually your older, slower hard-drive

Secondary: master = cd-rom
slave = writer

So you'll be using two IDE cables - one for your hard drives and one for your cd-rom/writer.

I don't know wether using DAM-66/100 cables and IDE ports would affect the performance of your machine, but it's just a thought.

I guess yo probably know these settings, but at least we can rule this out from now on.

How about trying the drive in a friend's pc (ideally one with a writer)? If the drive fails again then could you take it back to the shop?

Shame this drive is playing you up, as you otherwise seem to have a pretty decent pc setup.

All the best.

Thx for the suggestions.

I just read on another board that i posted on, that the Drive Light is supposed to be on, constantly, when theres a cd in the plextor writer.
I've never heard of this before, and would like to hear if someone could confirm this?.

works the drive for the rest good i mean it read normally? and is the flatcable with the red wire on pin one on the back thats also a reason that the light is always on even if there isn't acd in the drive
