I am looking at getting this drive, but I see different model numbers and can't find out if they are the same drive or not. I also see this drive listed as a RW7120 and RW7120A. Ricoh's homepage is no help, can someone shed some light on this. I really like this drive and want to get the lowest price without getting a different model by accident.

TIA

I just got a phone call from the distributor. It seems the RW and MP indicate different firmware on the drives. So I guess the question now is: Can one drive's firmware be applied to the other drive? It is beginning to look like I just need to buy the real deal and pay the extra $25. hehe I am cheap. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Well m8 I personally had a Mp7120a sk which I was told by Ricoh technical was a oem version and came without any media.

But mine did, I didn't keep it however because is doesn't have any form of burn proofing so I sold it after 2 days.

I am now either going to buy the Ricoh7125a or the Plex 1210ta.

Believe me it's a hard decision mainly because if like me you want to get something as compatable as possible with all forms of protection everyone swears by the Plex but just as many complain of problems with sub channel stuff.

I emailed both Plex and Ricoh asking if they supported subchannel reading and writing Ricoh said YES but Plex didn't commit themselves ?
So the way I see it is buy Ricoh and be sure it's OK or risk a Plex and find out when it's too late.........

Sorry if that was a bit off subject !

I ordered the Ricoh. Was your experience good with the mp7120 for the few days you had it. Also whatever the answer to that question, please give details of your hardware and software used to burn any cd's you created while you had the 7120.

Thanks,

I can't say that I tried much with it the lack of burn proofing put me off straight away. I had bought it after a magazine had recommended it and had said it had just link which I discovered it didn't.

I did backup Encarta 2000 which needs to read subchannel and had no problem with clone cd.

I did however notice that it would occasionaly freeze when writing the lead in , the burn light would light and stay lit but nothing would happen, eg-recording was not in progress. When this happened had to do ctrl+alt+del to get it to stop.

You might want to read the review on 7120 at www.cdrinfo.com

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, and pointing me to the review. I think I would still be trying this drive even if I had read that review prior to ordering the drive. Looks like all I may need is a drive that reads protected cd's better than the 7120 currently does, but this can be fixed with firmware and I am also hoping that ricoh will upgrade the firmware to support just-link (their version of burnproof) I will post later this week after some experience with the new drive.

the plex 121032ta comes with a spare jumper
which when applied transforms your plex into reading subchannel.....

I had the same question myself "get a rw7120 or spend $19.00 more and get the mp7120, I called one of the places that pricewatch.com had listed for the drive and they told me it was the also the firmware, also that the mp7120 is the retail version of the drive, as for firmware upgrades there was a site somewhere listed on one the the posts that has a firmware upgrade for both drives that which was the newest 2.0 for both drives, so you might get the rw and update the firmware. Personally I'm getting the MP version saves me the worry or hassle of updating and crossing my fingers that its gonna work right.....$139.00 on pricewatch (not bad!)
