View Full Version : Problem playing SD2 games

Here's my problem: When I try to play SD2 protected games (more specifically Max Payne and Civ3), all that happens is that the splash screen appears, then immediately disappears, no error message, nothing. This is with the original CDs too, not burnt copies.

But the really really strange thing is, when I bought Max Payne the week after it came out, the game -did- work, for all 3 times I played through it, then one day I was going to try a new mod, when this problem occured. I didn't really think too much of it then, I'd played enough of it for a while. I uninstalled, erased all the folders, etc.

A few weeks ago, I wanted to try the Kung Fu mod v2 for MP, so I reinstalled, and lo and behold, the problem was still there. I was pissed, but I just got the 1.05 no cd crack, thinking it was just a weird MP problem.

But noo, I got Civ3 today, and damn thing doesn't work at all, even though I can install with no problems. Can anyone think of why this may be? Remnants of Daemon-tools? Copy protection circumventing programs I have on my HD? Sigh...just pisses me off.

Well I thought of that, I haven't had Daemon Tools installed in a very long time, and just to somehow be sure, I downloaded the newest version, installed, enabled emulation options, tried it agani, didn't work, uninstalled daemon tools.

I also have PlayBackUp, but there's no uninstaller for that thing, and I don't have the original zip file, and GameFix is down (the files anyway), so I can't figure out what to delete manually. I tried just deleting the playbackup.exe in the c:\windows directory, but that didn't help. So I guess that's the problem then... any ideas on how to fix it, since there's no uninstaller?

File doesn't even exist. After I deleted playbackup.exe, I did a search of "playback" on my system, which came up with matches at all. Civ3 still doesn't work.

Edit: It worked! Funny how searching for "playback" turns up nothing, but searching for "*.vxd" does. The file was in the /windows/system/iosubsys directory BTW. Deleted, rebooted, and Civ3 finally fuckin starts.

Tell me what copy protection is for again?

why doesn't xp show the file ext code anymore? e.g.

used to be like say Dflw.exe now it is only Dflw

but in the file description area it will say it is an application

Is there anyway that xp can show those file extenions. THe other reason i want them is to change them so that the computer doesn't recognise them( important files :))

goes to show, god doesnt necessarily know all. he sees one hell of a lot though.

simpsons actually adddressed that today. homer made a prayer before he went out to steal grease. it was along the lines of
-"dear god. i know you are busy, since you can see women undressing and all, so i'll be brief. please help us to steal this grease, and i'll donate half the profits to charity" to which bart says
-"he's not stupid, homer"
