My brother bought a few Mr. Platinum CD-RW 700 MB (####://www.itbutikken.dk/default.asp?sprog=46&varenr=gi07 ... it's a Danish shop) but he has trouble with them.

He has tried to write 696 MB to it with:
Easy Cd Creator 3.5
Easy Cd Creator 5
Nero

And he has used:
Windows 98
Windows 2000

And he has tried a 5 MB file as well.

He can't format the CD's ... when he tries to write to it, it says writeprotected.

He has got a HP 9110i-writer. Has anyone tried these?

You mean format it using Direct CD? Because normally you cannot format a blank cd-r; you can only wite to it as and when you're burning files. To continue burning you have to make usre you leave the "session" open so that when you come to burn to the disk again you will be able to continue. This is what is known as a "multi-session disk".

CD-R disks cannot be formatted like a floppy disk or a hard drive - unless you use specific software.

No, we are talking about 700 MB CD-RW, rewriteable CD's, and I didn't need a lecture how to burn CD's, especially my younger brother, he has done several hundred by this time.

Didn't need a lecture? Well if you perceive other users spending their own time to try and help you out as best they can as lecturing, perhaps you shouldn't have bothered posting a REQUEST in the first place.

There's other ways of getting your point across without being offensive ;-)

End of topic, kiddo.

Hi there!

This is the "younger brother". I noticed you were upset, but it was clearly stated in the last message that we were talking about CD-RW:
(My brother bought a few Mr. Platinum CD-RW 700 MB.)

If that had been left out then I wouldn't say a thing.

I appreciate you trying to help me, but if you start talking about something other then what I asked for, then you are not helping me.

If someone writes about a problem they have, until it is changed, that is the problem people should try to solve and not change it in any way.

By that I mean if I say CD-RW and not CD-R then I mean CD-RW. And when it says CD-RW in both the message and the subject, wouldn't it be very unlikely to be a spelling error?

Moving on...

I'm not talking about Direct-CD. Not even the normal formatting method works.

I have #####ed my firmware and I have the latest version.

I have replied to your message out of common courtesy..

I am in no way attempting to change the scope of your problem. Just why on earth would anyone want to do that? Perhaps your initial perception of me was misguided; there are many time-wasters out there on the internet - look at my previous posts and you'll quickly see that I am not one of them.

Put 2 and 2 together and you'll see that I obviously made a mistake, for which I stand corrected. My intention is not to deliberatly go out of my way and make things difficult for you, and I'm sure people don't need reminding of the disadvantages of unwanted information..

Hence it's probably best that I respectfully refrain from posting any further help in the view that you may misinterprit it the wrong way. Which helps nobody.

I wish you the best of luck with your writer and hope you find a solution to your problems soon. :-)

well... since noones actually came up with any decent... solutions i thought i might chuck in my few words

- first of all, media shelf life isnt very long if its unburnt... - so you'd be best to ##### the manufacturing date of the CD-RW.
I've burnt to 1 MR Platinum CD-RW before and i'll have to say its not exactly a rw of choice! - my burner refused to burn it at over 4x!!
HP burners ... well theyre usually pretty good...
and your comment about 100's of cdr burning - well.. 100 cdrs on an hp 9100 series... are all of them burnt at top speed? (8x... if memory serves) if they are, then your writer should definately have life left in it.. but 100's of cdrs at 1x or 2x .. well.. it can be very taxing for a writer!
your best bet - ##### the shelf life of the media. if its old (over a few years manufacturing date) it might be deterriorated and no good.

also - i had a problem with cd burning and dual boot systems - i found win98 wouldnt burn when linux or win95 were on another partition (for some strange reason)
