back-up copy of "The Sims"

I have made a back-up copy of "The Sims" and the copy will not run the game. I understand that I must replace the original sims.exe file with one from a patch but I was unable to download the patch your site had listed. Can I find it somewhere else??? I am lost on what to do next.
