Please help this newbie. Just got a PS2 for xmas and I love it. It is also my only DVD player. I am in the USA and have been told I have a
model 4 PS2. I see that I can buy a DVD region killer disc as well as some chips that also kill regions. My question is this. I travel to
Europe, Mostly England, and would love to be able to buy DVD's there and play them back on my USA PS2. I am told that the region killer
will allow it to play but if it is PAL video I will need some sort of hardware devise to allow it to play correctly with full color and best
picture. Is this true? I am also told that if you have a PAL PS2 from europe you can play any DVD including NTSC DVD's if you have region
killer. Is this true? If a PAL PS2 is chipped can it play USA and European games on a NTSC TV? Is it the best of both worlds? If I go
through the trouble of chipping this box I want to make sure it does it all. Thanks.

ntsc ps2 systems are not capable of outputting a pal signal for dvds, so it's simply not possible, not even with a chip.
pal ps2's can output ntsc dvds, but psx games will run at 50 hz and will not display properly on an US tv.
also, there's no non-swap chip for imports yet, so you will have to swap for every US game you want to play too.

Thanks Arakon for the help. I called one of the mod chip companies and the sales guy said that there is a hardware add on box that you can use that goes between your ntsc ps2 system and the USA TV. That it will convert the PAL signal coming out of the ntsc ps2 so it will play properly on a USA TV. Does anyone know of such a unit. Does it really exist or was he full of it? If it is available has anyone used it. what should it cost?

Thanks

there are pal to ntsc converters, yes. but they won't do a thing for this problem, since the NTSC ps2 doesn't output any signal at all for PAL DVDs, so there's nothing to convert.

NTSC PS2 can output PAL signals. It is just your TV can't display it correctlly.

Yes, a converter will be needed in order to see PAL movies on your NTSC TV. Just do a search for "pal tv" on the web and you should found a lot of places selling video converter. However they are very costly (around $300 USD).

Another solution is buy a VGA box for around $45 USD then use your monitor to watch PAL movies or play PAL games.

One more solution is pick up a PAL TV while you traval to England. However you will need a voltage converter for your TV because they use 220v instead of 110v.

ntsc ps2 can output pal, but not on DVD movies.
it'll report an error along the lines of "invalid output format".

I remember years ago for video in the US you could buy a VCR that would play both PAL and NTSC video. Does such a thing exist for DVD players? Can you get a stand alone DVD player to play all regions? If a converter cost $300 I might as well just buy a new DVD player. Buy a PAL TV? There must be a better way then that. If anyone remembers the audio DAT format there was copy protection in the consumer models but you could spend a little more and get a pro model that ignored the copy protection codes. Anything like that with DVD?

Have a look around the net for a LOGIX 3000 DVD player, this is multi-region,has automatic switching on output signal (NTSC or PAL), & also plays VCD's & MP3 disks.Im UK based & bought mine from JUNGLE.COM which is also UK based (I don't know if they do overseas shipping, you'll have to check). This is by far one of the best DVD players for the money if you can get hold of one, about £130 (pounds sterling)
