I had built up quite an inventory of 74min CDR's over the years and finally found a use for them since obtaining a PSX. I am running low now and went to the store and found a lot of 80min CDR's.
Is there a difference in using either media for PSX backup purposes or any other software purpose? I know for some music CD's it makes a difference?

No problem. Use the 700MV (80 mins) CD-Rs for everything.

Difference is 6 minutes m8 :D No difference at all for backup purposes apart from the 6mins, I use verbatim 80 mins (700mb) as to 74 min (650mb) which I used a lot, but I always found myself going and buying 700mb disks if I needed to back up a disk with more than 650mb on it, so now I just buy 700mb disks, 'cos there's only a slight difference in price and I know I'm covered for doing any disk then. :)

No PSX game requires an 80min disc, but if you can obtain 80min cdr's for a good price then go for it.
