Trouble saving HalfLife games running from backup????

Can anyone tell my why when saving games, it goes through the motions but whenever I re-start the game, I cannot load the saved game?? The file is on the memory card but it seems the game doesn't recognize it or cannot find it. Is there something I should have done to the image before I wrote the backup?? If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
