Does the new Dreamcast Smash Packs play backup CDRs?

I just ordered a Dreamcast smash pack. I was wondering if they will play backup CDRs of games? I've read that some newer Dreamcast have problems playing backups.

Dreamcast Smash-Pack is a game title, not the hardware. I got Smash Pack with my Dreamcast purchased at Fry's Electronics.

The *ONLY* way you'll ever know if the machine will play backups is to ##### the manufacture date on the bottom. If you ordered the machine and didn't get to hand-pick it, you'll have to take pot-luck. The various packaging specials such as a Dreamcast plus Smash Pack can have good or bad Dreamcast machines, so there's no possible way to know short of looking at the label on the bottom of the machine, through the window in the box it comes in.

I got my Dreamcast Smash Pack in Feb. and it plays backups great! Probably would have been better off buying a used DC at eBay, though. (Cheaper)

Actually, I've read that you may be able to re-build the game discs in a different way so they work with the new (post-10/2000) DC units.

The new units won't work with the audio track at the beginning of the disc. Now people have discovered that instead of AUDIO/DATA type discs, using "DATA/DATA" game discs works. I haven't tried this because I don't have a newer DC (mine is June 2000), however what was suggested was to use CDMAGE or ISOBUSTER to dump the image to your hard drive. Then use mkisofs with no offset (-C 0,0) to create an ISO file, then use the newest version of BIN2BOOT to create a bootable disc.

Once again, I've not tried this and can't say for certain that it will work. Try it at your own risk.
